Description
La Fortaleza (The Fortress) is the current official residence of the Governor of Puerto Rico. It was built between 1533 and 1540 to defend the harbor of San Juan. The structure is also known as Palacio de Santa Catalina (Santa Catalina's Palace). It is the oldest executive mansion in continuous use in the New World and was listed by UNESCO in 1983 as a World Heritage Site. From the gardens you have a stunning view of the bay and historic city wall or La Muralla. La Muralla, dotted with old stone sentry towers, or Garitas, was built to protect the city of Old San Juan, Puerto Rico, from enemy attacks. Construction began in 1634 and the 20 foot thick masonry walls were completed by 1782. Today the remaining portions of the wall surround the historic city and feature a pedestrian walk along the seashore.
